Our unifying voice?
How we can all be stronger by working together
We all speak with a unique voice – whether we work in urban advertising, leaflet distribution, bill posting, printing, stickers, flyering or cultural distribution.
As creatives, street marketers and artists, we understand our local area like nobody else and know how to bring it to life with our innovative and unique offerings.
But could our greatest strength also be our biggest weakness?
Our individuality means we swim alone in the vast OOH advertising ocean, small fish in a huge pond that encompasses everything from neon signs to billboards and art installations.
And like any crowded space, the giants are the loudest in the room, using their might to drown out competition and controlling by algorithm.
This means the value of the message they send out isn’t always high and the great things we have to say aren’t always heard.
Connecting with each other
The big companies have an advantage as they’re established and people are aware of them – giving them a massive global reach.
In contrast, we are often limited by our geography and our real estate.
If we are doing great things locally, there is no reason we can’t do that on an even bigger scale by collaborating.
Through setting up partnerships, we can provide services for other companies in our area, reach new markets ourselves in other cities, and if a client wants us to take them global, we can offer that opportunity.
Maybe you didn’t know there was a company doing what you do in Glasgow, in Bern or North Dakota – but the association allows us to find each other, scale up and improve our offering.
Once we know each other exists, we can talk and map out exciting new journeys.
It can give our local companies a global perspective.
Facing challenges together
Real world advertising is hard as we are up against much more effective channels, sometimes making it difficult to build an ambient media project.
But what we do is really important as an alternative to traditional methods.
We target consumers not individuals so are privacy aware, are hyper local, unique and offer something far more nuanced than the big brands.
In this delicate, place-based advertising world, our association can provide a marketing channel through a directory that creates transparency, customer trust and quality control.
It will also allow us to discuss the challenges facing the industry and to tackle them together.
Often it is defined through a negative correlation: “I’m going to shove something of low value down your throat.”
But advertising is information and by working together, we can build our brands and create a powerful, valuable voice that resonates throughout the world of ambient media.
